Rich Someday c. 2006

(all songs by Randall Bramblett, except where noted)

1. WHERE ARE YOU TONIGHT

Standin by a statue of Stevie Ray Vaughn
Lookin out at the water
Downtown people doin business in their sleep
I’m aimless wanderin got no promises to keep

Bats in a bridge ants in a hill
I’m walkin so long I’m standin still
Layin in the grass and starin at the clouds
So many things I can’t say out loud

Where are you...Where are you tonight

A wisp of a cloud and a fading sun
What more can you ask for
Gnats in the air 10 million strong
But try as I may I can’t find nothin wrong

Contrails stripe the sky birds don’t seem to mind
World gone to hell and the sun still shines
Layin in the grass and starin at the clouds
So many things I can’t say out loud

Where are you...where are you tonight

Standin by the statue of Stevie Ray Vaughn
Throwin bread on the water
Boy and a dog goin round and round
Moon stuck in a tree and it won’t come down

Big ugly bird you got a pretty song
World gone to hell
And you can’t find nothin wrong
Layin in the grass and starin at the clouds
So many things I can’t say out loud

Where are you…where are you tonight

2. BEAUTIFUL BLUR
One day come and one day go
Faster than you ever dreamed that time could flow

Stop sign shakin in the wind
Open your door and let me in
Baby I feel so lost and exposed
Like the trash blowin ‘round on Nowhere Road

Nothin but a beautiful blur
Ain’t that the way it’s always been
Nothin but a beautiful blur
And we do it all over again

Not long ago when the world was green
You could keep a lot of things from being seen
Now leaves are fallin and the summer’s blown past
I got a bad feelin that love won’t last

Nothin but a beautiful blur
And we go ‘round and ‘round
Nothin but a beautiful blur
Ain’t nobody gonna slow us down

One day come and one day go
Faster than you ever dreamed that time could flow

Now I run out of ways to fill you up
And I run out of ways to self destruct
The further I go the less I want to see
It’s a hard rain comin down on me

Nothin but a beautiful blur
From the window of a speeding train
Nothin but a beautiful blur
And we do it all over again yeah

Nothin but a beautiful blur

3. RICH SOMEDAY
(by Randall Bramblett/Buddy Blackmon)

Livin on the surface of a big ole ball
Somethin about it don’t make no sense at all
Little bitty people runnin around
Head up in the clouds and they won’t come down

Chorus:
Gonna get rich someday
Buy the whole damn world
Gonna get rich someday

Sittin at the bus stop what do I see
Big fine cars rollin right past me
Keep your windows rolled up tight
A lot of good people can’t sleep tonight

Chorus

Sweepin up the trash at the shopping mall
Layin on the sidewalk
When my name was called
Someday baby when I get well
Gonna tell everybody
Go straight to hell

Chorus

4. IT'S ALRIGHT

Black strings cross the heavens
They slice up the beautiful blue
I follow this highway but I know it won’t lead me to you
The chill in the air it leaves me exposed
The drag of the days unravels my soul
I wish I could take us back to a time
When the sky was singing

Chorus:
It’s alright…tears you’ve been crying
Alright…I’m crying too
It’s alright…world full of promises
Alright…it’s world full of lies
Alright….alright

I’m breaking it down to the fractions the tiniest things
I’m searching my mind for the picture of someone to blame
Everything’s tangled and nothing is straight
I’m straining my eyes and I’m losing my way
Don’t you remember a day that was clear
And the sky was singing?

Chorus

Black strings cross the heavens
They slice up the beautiful blue
I follow this highway but I know it won’t lead me to you
Maybe you’ll find me when I’m all broken down
A carload of dreams on the way out of town
Don’t you know somewhere in the serious world
Where the sky is singing

Chorus

5. SILENCE
(by Randall Bramblett/Buddy Blackmon)

Your finger’s jumping in your sleep
Your lips are moving but you do not speak
So far away that I lose contact
If I could reach you, you know I’d bring you back

It’s a long way down to where you’re sleeping
It’s a long way back from the secret that you’re keeping

Chorus:
Silence is a lonely room
Where we can’t live
Silence is the only coldest answer
That you ever…that you ever give

Don’t protect me from the bitter truth
If you don’t want me the way that I want you
Don’t leave me standing in the cold outside
While you run away in your dreams to hide

It’s a long way down to where you’re sleeping
it’s a long way back from the secret that you’re keeping

Chorus

I went out walking the other night
Just to bathe my mind in the yellow street lights
Red tears were running down the face of the moon
And a night bird was calling
Just to make me think of you

It’s a long way down to where you’re sleeping
It’s a long way back from the secret that you’re keeping

Chorus

6. SOMBODY LIKE ME
(by Randall Bramblett/Davis Causey)

The blankness of this page the emptiness of my heart
This lost and lonely feeling wants to tear me apart
I take off my coat but I can’t sit down no
I’m lookin at myself from the other side of town

Chorus:
I’m just tryin to be somebody like me
Maybe someday I’ll run into myself
I’m just tryin to be somebody like me
I know you ain’t gonna love nobody else

I tear off another page and I throw it away
While I wait for nothing to happen day after day
Take the shirt off my back take the shoes off my feet
It kinda feels invisible down underneath

Chorus

There are so many birds with so many songs
All against the white noise comin from my telephone
Had to make my choice had to take it off the hook
Somebody’s tappin at my window
But I just don’t wanna look

Chorus

7. FADING
(by Randall Bramblett/Jason Slatton)

When you’re falling into pieces
And the days drag like leaves
Across the empty sidewalks
Will you wander back to me

If I had a million roses
I would drop them at your feet
Burn your name across the blackboard sky
If that would bring you back to me

Chorus:
The more you’re fading
The more I want to see you clear
The more you’re fading
I could never let you disappear

Can I pull you through the night with me
Before the light slips ‘neath the shade
Can I tell you that you’re stronger
Than any shadows that you’ve made

I will always try to find you
Through the tangle and the haze
And the mesmerizing voices
That are pulling you away

Chorus

So I’m staring at the pinholes
In the cold October sky
And I’m drinking up the starlight
To keep from telling you goodbye

Chorus

8. RAINVILLE
(by Randall Bramblett/Davis Causey)

This is the kind of town
At night they roll the sidewalks up
They put the no on the vacancy sign
Another dream gives up the ghost to another sunrise

Walkin down the same old road
Slavin at the same old job
Lookin for a crack in the concrete sky
Countin cars on a long freight train
While life slips by

Chorus:
Lorraine don’t cry
Just say goodbye
God knows I tried
I’m gettin out of Rainville

It’s not the big things no it’s not the tragedies
‘Cause you got friends who will shelter you
Say a prayer dig your heels in
Somehow you make it through

It’s all the little things, little straws across your back
One day you’re standin on the ledge
Broken nail bounced check flat tire
Sends you over the edge

Chorus

You say you’ll always stay
You say you’re roots run deep
I’m on the outside lookin in
You’re a flower in the field
I’m clothes hangin in the wind

Chorus

9. QUEEN OF ENGLAND

Through the cane field come a lullaby
Say a prayer for the lost and the broken down
It don’t matter where you come from
You will end up being from the wrong town

I came up from Jackson Corner
Just to have me a drink and a look around
I went back with the deacon’s daughter
She was lookin for a way to get out of town

Chorus:
Everything gonna be alright
And the sun’s gonna shine tonight
Everybody gonna come my way
And we’ll understand it all one day

Caught a ride with a pulpwood driver
He was drinkin red liquor from the floorboard
Said he used to have a daughter
But he don’t want to talk about it anymore

We went flyin down a two lane
God knows why we didn’t see the bridge out
She went down in yellow water
Now it’s all in the world I can think about

Chorus

I had a dream
It didn’t make no sense
I saw my savior
Tangled up in a barbed wire fence

Queen of England’s got a number
And they tell me she don’t go nowhere without it
Get in trouble call the number
And you’ll never hear another word about it

Chorus

10. HATE TO SEE YOU GO

Big green moth on a window screen
So still and resigned
I guess you’re ready for anything
That comes down the lonesome line

Whatever happens it’ll be alright
Guess I’ll take my lesson from a moth tonight
Though I can’t tell you so
I just hate to see you go

The stirring the thrill and the possibilities
When our fingers touch
It’s almost too good and too beautiful
When you feel so much

I’d like to drive you to town in a big black car
Ride you around your favorite star
More than you’ll ever know
I just hate to see you go

It’s gonna be a long tomorrow
No matter what I tell myself
A whole lot of pain and sorrow
That I can’t pawn off on someone else
Pull your car back on the road
And keep your expectations low
That’s all they say

And it’s too late for callin out
For all the usual things
And it’s too late for holdin up
And waitin for the phone to ring
I’m just sittin like a moth on a screen
I guess I’m ready for anything
Though I can’t tell you so
I just hate to see you go

11. OIL SPOT

There’s an oil spot growin underneath the car
Atlas on the dashboard baby but we don’t get far
Little red wagon full of sand
You got the ocean in your hands

Chorus:
All I want just a little more time in heaven
All I need is just a little more time with you
I don’t care how small we are

Layin in a lawn chair howling at the milky way
Pictures in the sky baby just like they say
Seven little sisters ridin in a car
Throwin empty bottles at the stars

Chorus

Tie your shoes together and hang ‘em from the power line
I’m standin in the twilight baby and I’m feelin fine
It don’t matter where we’ve been
Always comin back home again

Chorus

12. STUPID SHOES
(by Randall Bramblett/Davis Causey)

Less than worthless today
Nothing anyone can say
It's the darkness I'm drawn to

I been starin into space
But the sky's got a poker face
You couldn't reach me if you wanted to

Chorus:
Stupid shoes on my feet
They won't tell me life is sweet
They go down the twisted street and I follow

I been sitting in my chair
Breathin someone else's air
With the television blowin

I'm been wastin my time
Lightin fuses in my mind
And you know where I'm going

Chorus

It's no good being right
To be winning every fight
Only get what you're givin

It don't make a lot of sense
To be hangin on a fence
While the world goes on livin

Chorus

13. CONCRETE MIND
(by Randall Bramblett/Mike Hines)

Angels hovering
‘Round the porch light
Working over time
I was sleeping off a bad night
Me with a concrete mind
Me with a concrete mind

Spirits standing in the doorway
Wavin welcome signs
All I see is come back some other day
Me with a concrete mind
Me with a concrete mind

Can you see me when I’m sinkin
On my solid ground
Can you find me when I don’t want to be found

Love came creeping through the window
Like a curling vine
Looking for someone to cling to
And me with a concrete mind
Me with a concrete mind

Can you see me when I’m hiding
Behind my hollow words
Can you hear me when I don’t want to be heard

Sunlight sifting down around me
Through the bowing pines
I was given everything I wanted
And me with a concrete mind
Me with a concrete mind
